Painting of the historic Dr. Samuel Martin Home in Hazlehurst, Georgia by artist Don Yaun.

Historical Dr. Samuel Martin Home – a painting that captures one of Hazlehurst, Georgia’s most meaningful early‑1900s landmarks. A Greek Revival home and is rich in local history and ownership. I was commissioned to create this acrylic work to help preserve the memory of this once‑grand Southern home, which now stands in a state of significant deterioration. Many residents of Jeff Davis County have long admired the structure, and the community expressed a desire to document its character before time and weather erase it completely.

This project holds personal significance for me. I grew up only two blocks from the Dr. Samuel Martin Home, and it was a familiar sight throughout my childhood. Its tall windows, weathered wood, and quiet presence always sparked my imagination. Even in its aging condition, the home carries a sense of dignity and history that deserved to be honored through art.

There is hope that the property may one day be restored and transformed into a charming bed‑and‑breakfast, giving new life to a piece of Hazlehurst’s heritage. Until then, this painting serves as a visual record of the home’s original character and the stories it represents.

The artwork is currently on display at The Big House, another historic colonial‑style residence located next door. This building now serves as a community space for Hazlehurst–Jeff Davis County, hosting meetings, events, and administrative functions. Displaying the painting there allows visitors to appreciate the region’s architectural history and the importance of preserving local landmarks through art.
