Water Lilies in the Fall is a dazzling studio acrylic painting that transforms a quiet cove at Fairfield Lake in Sapphire Valley, North Carolina, into an explosion of complementary autumn color and light. This large 36″ × 24″ painting was inspired by a late-afternoon walk during a research trip with Don Yaun’s wife for a commission. As the low sun bathed the water lilies and reflections in vivid blue and orange, Don knew instantly this scene demanded to be painted. The lilies themselves are secondary—subtle greens, blues, yellows, and reds—while the overwhelming focus is on the dynamic interplay of color, shape, and atmosphere.
The palette centers on Cadmium Orange and Ultramarine Blue, with layered glazes across the entire surface creating depth and luminosity. The lilies are rendered with careful warm and cool tones to remain visible yet harmonious, never stealing the spotlight from the radiant reflections in water of autumn trees and sky. The result is one of Don’s most exciting and successful works—a classical “waltz” on canvas that feels alive with energy.
Before even starting, Don posted the reference photo online, and dear friend Jason LeBlanc immediately messaged, “This one is mine!”—a joyful pre-purchase claim that made the painting even more special. It sold quickly and remains a favorite.
The painting was selected as a finalist in Artists Magazine’s “The Best of Acrylic” Fall 2023 issue, a prestigious recognition of its bold creativity and execution.
