Studio acrylic painting "Towns Bluff 2" by Georgia artist Don Yaun, depicting leaning trees over a sand barrier along the Altamaha River with rhythmic motion and distant water in Hazlehurst

Towns Bluff 2 is a serene yet dynamic studio acrylic painting that visits the evolving landscape of Towns Bluff along the Altamaha River in Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis County, Georgia. This 12″ × 16″ work on textured gesso board builds on another painting “Towns Bluff” by shifting focus to an upstream vantage point, where towering trees lean rhythmically over a newly formed sand barrier island. The composition captures the sense of motion in the trees—twisting and rotating around the frame—as if guarding the once-open beach of Don’s youth. Beyond the foreground foliage lies the wide, untamed Altamaha River, its surface catching soft light through the canopy.

Painted in 2026, this piece reflects the dramatic changes since the 1960s, when Towns Bluff was a wide, sandy riverfront visible from the Uvalda bridge on Hwy 221—a local gathering spot for swimming, water-skiing, and thrilling hydroplane boat races. Over decades, shifting sandbars and dense growth reclaimed the shoreline, obscuring the expansive view. This painting honors those early memories while embracing the river’s wild, reclaimed beauty.

Towns Bluff is now part of Towns Bluff Park & Heritage Center, a peaceful campground and RV park accessible via historic Uvalda Landing Road. The site remains an inspiring place for artists drawn to Georgia’s waterways and the quiet stories they hold.
