The Oregon coastline is well know for it’s vistas. I worked from a photo taken at an overlook by the highway. The hardest thing to show in this painting is the distance from where I was standing to the ocean below. Distances for the mountains are simply grayed color that get’s lighter the further it goes away and blends to the sky.
The most fun part of this painting was working with the water. I used a combinations of Ultramarine and Cerulean Blue to achieve what I was looking for. I painted over many areas several times in this piece because I just could not get the feel of vast distance. In the end, perseverance pays off. I think the hardest part probably looks the simplest to most people but the sky was just not working. There was too much contrast and variation in formation types so I simplified it which is usually the best option. I didn’t want to focus to be the top of the painting.
