Studio acrylic still life "Lemon Bulbs" by Georgia artist Don Yaun, featuring a bright yellow lemon, white light bulb, and clear bulb on complementary blue and orange background papers

Lemon Bulbs is a thoughtful studio acrylic still life that showcases Don Yaun’s deliberate exploration of design, color harmony, and visual movement. This small, 10″ × 8″ painting, created in 2018 during his early return to art after a 40-year break, was inspired by a Christmas visit from his son Kevin, who was experimenting with still-life setups. Don rearranged a similar composition, shifting the background papers to vivid complementary blue and orange sheets for maximum contrast and energy.

The painting is all about intentional design: the bright orange sheet offsets the blue negative space, while three rounded objects— an opaque yellow lemon, a white light bulb, and a clear light bulb—create balance through subtle differences in reflection and texture. The lemon’s bright yellow echoes the orange background as an analogous accent. Objects intentionally bleed off the edges, with strategic overlaps and carefully placed lost-and-found edges guiding the viewer’s eye in a dynamic flow: from the white bulbs to the lemon, across the orange paper, and into the clear bulb.

As of January 2026, Don considers this—only his third painting after resuming his career—one of his most thoughtfully designed works, prioritizing artistic principles over pure rendering.
