"La Paz Waterfall Gardens" by Georgia artist Don Yaun, depicting a dramatic waterfall cascading between steep tropical walls with lush greenery and rushing water

La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a dynamic studio acrylic painting that captures the raw power and lush beauty of one of Costa Rica’s most accessible and enchanting waterfalls. This 22″ × 28″ work, created in 2018 during Don Yaun’s first year back in his renewed art career, reflects the challenge and joy of relearning techniques from his Ringling College of Art & Design days. The scene was photographed on a short, scenic hike from the family’s first night’s stay at La Paz Waterfall Gardens & Peace Lodge—a luxurious eco-resort surrounded by dense tropical rainforest.

The waterfall tumbles dramatically between steep, verdant walls, framed by thick foliage and mist. Don focused on creating deep atmospheric perspective: multiple glazes layered over the initial drawing to build distance and depth, with brisk, flat-brush strokes and translucent white mixes adding the rushing motion and sparkle to the foreground water. Opaque highlights and careful tonal adjustments bring the cascade to life, while the surrounding jungle softens into rich greens and shadows. The result is a vivid, immersive tribute to Costa Rica’s natural splendor.
