Daylily acrylic floral painting by Don Yaun – bold red-orange blooms with yellow centers, green stems, and purple background, 2023

Floral paintings offer one of the purest joys in art—unrestricted play with color, shape, and design. This piece draws directly from my wife’s flower bed, where these daylilies stand out with their warm reds, fiery oranges, and brilliant yellow centers, radiating energy and warmth.

The complementary greens of the stems and leaves provide natural contrast, while the soft purple background enhances the intensity of the blooms without competing. The flower shapes are ideal for composition: they can be molded and arranged freely to direct eye movement around the canvas, without needing strict symmetry. In this case, the approach leans almost abstract—the foliage rendered in very loose, bold brushstrokes for a sense of movement and vitality, while the flowers themselves receive crisper, more focused strokes to draw attention and bring the subject sharply into focus.

I love painting florals precisely because they allow this kind of freedom, and they consistently rank among the most appreciated and collected pieces in my work. This 8″ × 10″ acrylic on gesso board, painted in the studio in 2023, is Available.
