Escaping the Sun acrylic painting by Don Yaun – cows resting in shade under tree in North Georgia pasture with old tractor, 2023

For years, I searched for the perfect setting to paint cows in a way that felt authentic and evocative—peaceful animals finding respite in a rural landscape. That quest not only yielded this piece but inspired an entire Farming series, including other farm scenes and even a farmer portrait.

The opportunity arose unexpectedly when a friend invited me to join him visiting their family property in North Georgia. As we departed the farmlands, I spotted cows in the distance, clustered in a pasture with a winding drive leading back into the field. They were escaping the intense summer heat under a large shade tree, calm enough to let me approach on foot for photos. In the background, another tree sheltered an old tractor and trailer, instantly transporting me to memories of family reunions at the old homeplace in Suomi, Georgia—a bygone farming community.

The scene resonated deeply with viewers, many sharing their own stories of similar childhood farms, shade trees, and lazy summer days. It even led to a commission for another farm painting (Russ Farm). In the studio, I captured the serene atmosphere on a large 48″ × 30″ canvas: the cows’ glossy brown hides glowing in dappled light, the vibrant green foliage overhead with warm yellow highlights, the earthy dirt road drawing the eye to the distant red tractor, all set against an expansive green pasture and soft blue sky. The loose brushstrokes and textured layers emphasize the nostalgic, timeless quality that has made an impression on so many.
