Savannah Wildlife Refuge is a vibrant plein air oil painting capturing a sun-drenched moment along a small cove at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge in Savannah, Georgia. This 11″ × 14″ work on canvas panel was painted on a hot, sunny day during an outing with a small group of three artists. A curious alligator watched quietly from the water as bright green grasses and warm mossy tones filled the foreground, with trees framing the peaceful waterway.
The painting reflects the rich, reflective quality of the refuge’s wetlands, with dappled light and vibrant greens creating a lively yet tranquil scene.
About Savannah National Wildlife Refuge The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1927 and spans over 30,000 acres along the South Carolina-Georgia border. Much of the area was once active rice plantations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The historic canals and dikes still visible today were originally built by enslaved people to manage water flow and transport rice harvests. Today the refuge protects diverse wetlands, forests, and wildlife, offering excellent opportunities for birding, fishing, boating, and plein air painting.
