Plein air oil painting "Wisteria" by Georgia artist Don Yaun, depicting cascading purple wisteria blooms nestled among pines and oaks bordering a grassy field in Flowery Branch

Wisteria is a fresh, luminous plein air oil painting that captures the abundant beauty of blooming wisteria vines in early spring on a property in Flowery Branch, Georgia. This 14″ × 18″ work on canvas board was painted on location with the Plein Air Painters of Lake Lanier group. The early morning light was ideal, gently illuminating the cascading purple blossoms as they nestled among tall pines and oaks, bordering an open grassy field. The fragrant flowers on the vines drape gracefully, creating natural arches and pockets of color that contrast beautifully with the deep greens of the surrounding trees and the soft light filtering through the canopy.

About Wisteria Wisteria is a vigorous, woody climbing vine known for its spectacular, cascading clusters of fragrant flowers in shades of purple, lavender, pink, or white. It typically blooms in early to mid-spring, often before the leaves fully emerge, creating a dramatic display. Native to Asia and North America, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. While beautiful, wisteria is a strong grower and can become invasive if not managed; it’s often trained over arbors, fences, or allowed to climb trees for a natural, romantic effect.
