Included in “AcrylicWorks 7” in late 2020.
My son Kevin inspired me to paint this still life as he set it up and began doing studies. I really liked the color but thought it would be better with more of a blue/purple look instead of white and grays. The background was originally much lighter but to make the oranges stand out, it had to be darkened considerably.
To create the oranges, I painted several layers of color and glazed over to create the darker areas then applied opaque color and highlights. As with most of my paintings, they go through stages where initially it looks great with crisp and loose sketching and in many cases, I could leave it alone, but I usually continue to work to a point it gets dark with glazes and that’s when i apply the opaques on top and it starts to come to life.
I’ve often said I love color so much I could eat it.
A winning piece included in Acrylic Works 7 competition, and featured in the special issue of “The Best of Acrylic”.
