Snow Home is a deeply personal impressionistic studio acrylic painting capturing a quiet winter view of Don Yaun’s homestead in Buford, Georgia—the home he and his wife built on their 11½-acre wooded property in 1981. This expansive 36″ × 24″ canvas transforms a snow-covered scene into a rich “white painting” built from layered glazes and opaque colors, with delicate variations of blue, lavender, and warm undertones bringing life to the bare trees and soft snowfall. The foreground features fruit trees (pear, apple, pecan) and grape vine trellises hiding a garden to the left, while faint smoke rises from the chimney, hinting at the wood stoves that have heated the home for decades using trees harvested from the land itself.
The painting reflects a lifetime of memories: clearing brush on weekends, raising two sons here, and watching the once-rural wilderness slowly give way to growing city noise and development. Despite challenges (including advice against tackling such a “tough” winter subject), Don created this piece to preserve the homestead’s peaceful essence for his family—one day, it will be the old home place.
In October 2019, “Snow Home” was selected for The Art of Georgia IV exhibit by the Georgia Council of the Arts, where it hung in the State Capitol for six months. Don presented it personally to Governor Brian Kemp and his wife, who met with each of the 27 artists selected from 75 entries—a proud moment that underscores its significance.
