Plein air acrylic painting "Ellijay Down Town" by Georgia artist Don Yaun, depicting a historic courthouse and street scene with strong perspective, orange-red buildings, and blue sky in Ellijay

Ellijay Down Town is a lively plein air impressionistic acrylic painting capturing the charming historic core of downtown Ellijay, Georgia. Completed in just 2½ hours on location, this 12″ × 16″ work uses bold forced perspective to draw the eye along a sidewalk toward the classic courthouse facade running perpendicular in the background. Tall street lamps and bare winter trees frame the scene, creating strong vertical rhythm and graphic simplicity. Don Yaun amplified the energy with complementary contrasts: deep saturated orange-reds in the buildings against a vivid blue sky, resulting in a dynamic, sunlit composition full of movement and warmth.

This painting marked a personal milestone—the artist’s first outing with the Gilmer Plein Air Group on Facebook. Arriving early to ease nerves (and enjoy a local lunch), Don scouted spots and chose this one for its striking design. The experience overcame initial intimidation, boosting confidence to later found his own group: Plein Air Painters of Lake Lanier. Downtown Ellijay’s mix of preserved architecture, small-town feel, and artistic community continues to inspire.
