Studio acrylic painting "Okefenokee Pitcher Plant" by Georgia artist Don Yaun, featuring backlit translucent red and orange pitchers with yellow flowers against a purple swamp background

Okefenokee Pitcher Plant is a vibrant studio acrylic painting that celebrates the exotic, carnivorous beauty of these remarkable plants thriving in the wetlands of the Okefenokee Swamp. This 11″ × 14″ work was inspired by a memorable drive along the Okefenokee Swamp Park Road outside Waycross, Georgia, with Don Yaun’s brother and a friend. Amazed by the thousands of pitcher plant clusters lining the ditches, they stopped to photograph them up close. Don positioned himself for perfect afternoon backlighting, allowing the sun to shine through the translucent tubes and reveal their glowing reds, oranges, and subtle greens.

The composition maximizes color impact: the delicate yellow flowers rise as bright focal points against a complimentary purple background haze, while the pitchers themselves glow with rich, saturated tones. The result is a luminous, almost jewel-like study of nature’s ingenuity in the swamp’s unique ecosystem.
