Night Beach is a contemplative studio acrylic painting that transforms a simple evening seascape into a deeply atmospheric meditation on solitude and reflection. This 16″ × 12″ work was born from a creative challenge posed by Don Yaun’s son Kevin, who provided a reference photo and encouraged his father to interpret it freely. Don responded with an exaggerated, emotional vision: intense complementary colors of vivid orange and deep blue dominate the post-sunset sky, with luminous clouds glowing against the dark expanse. A single silhouetted figure stands on the dark, sandy beach, gazing outward in quiet thought, their long shadow stretching across the wet sand as faint reflected light from the clouds illuminates the scene.
The horizon line is subtle, almost dissolving into the atmosphere, while the sky’s brightness softly spills onto the shore. The painting builds on multiple layers of ultramarine glazes for depth in the shadows, combined with scumbled brushwork in the warm grays and saturated oranges, creating a rich, textured surface that feels both luminous and mysterious.
This piece represents a father-son collaboration and Don’s willingness to push beyond realism into pure emotional expression.
